• Lapis Lazuli was the primary souce of blue pigment in oil paintings before modern times. Being rare and difficult to obtain, it was reserved for the depiction of the holiest robes and celestial, heavenly blue skies. The gold pyrite present in the stone when ground into pigment gave the blue a divine glittering effect.
